All about 2nd Grade
Welcome to Second Grade!
The following information is intended to answer questions you may have concerning the first day of school and the beginning of the school year:
Arrival at school: Upon arrival, all students should go directly to our classroom. Please do not arrive before 8:50. This is the procedure for the entire school year. The school day begins at 9:10 A.M. each day. Please make sure your child knows his/her bus number and how he/she will be traveling home from school. If your child arrives after 9:10, you must sign in at the front office.
School bag: Please remember to bring your LABELED supplies to school on the first day if you were unable to bring them to our open house. (You can refer to the website for the list of requested school supplies.) Additionally, students should bring a snack, lunch, and water bottle to school each day.
Lunch: Your child will have the option to bring a lunch from home or buy lunch at school. Choices include- “A lunch”, pizza, deli, or "fun lunch". A link to the Chartwell's menu can be found on the GES homepage. Your child may bring money each day that he/she is buying in a sealed envelope with his/her name, or money may be placed into your child's account. Please make sure your child knows if he/she will be eating a packed lunch from home or purchasing a lunch every day. If your child is buying lunch, please discuss which option to buy, and where the money for lunch will be located in the school bag or if your child is to use his/her account. This eliminates a lot of anxiety while taking lunch count and getting the children ready for lunch. If you choose to deposit money into an account for your child, he/she will enter his/her CR Student ID number at the cash register to pay for lunch. Your child should memorize this number as it will be used for various purposes throughout the year. Finally, a the payment option for lunches is MyPaymentsPlus. With this program, you may deposit funds in a district system, MyPayments Plus, to cover the cost of school lunches. More information about student accounts can be found on the Food Services link.
Snack: In addition to a snack that you may include for lunch, students need to bring ONE healthy snack daily for our classroom afternoon snack time. Some suggestions might include pretzels, granola bars, cereal, goldfish crackers, fruit, etc. Your child will be eating the snack at his/her desk, so please send a napkin and any necessary utensils. They are not permitted to go to the cafeteria for supplies as other students may be having lunch and/or the cafeteria may be closed. Please remember that snack time is intended to give them a little energy boost. We are a peanut/nut free room. It is incredibly important to be respectful of the allergies in our room and therefore, please do not send in snacks that contain peanuts or tree nuts. This includes Nutella, Reese's cups, trail mix with nuts, crackers with peanut butter, etc.
Water bottles: Students should bring a water bottle to school. Please write your child’s name on the water bottle. It is helpful to send in reusable bottles with a built-in straw lid since they are less likely to spill if they are knocked over. Students may empty and/or fill water bottles at home, at the filtered water station by the gym/cafeteria, or in the sink in our room. Talk with your child about a system for washing and filling that will work for you. Water bottles will be sent home each day for cleaning.
Papers: All of your child’s school papers and important papers (from the office or PTO, handouts, required forms, etc.) will come home in the BLUE hard plastic folder that you bring in as part of your child's supplies. This folder will be your child's "Homework/Take-Home Folder". This folder needs to be checked by parents EVERY NIGHT. Please empty everything out of the folder nightly, and then return any forms or necessary paperwork the following day. All schoolwork that is sent home may stay at home unless noted sign and return.
*** Remembering to bring home, empty, notify parents of papers, and return the “Homework Folder” is part of your child's nightly homework. We try to encourage parents to allow their child to become responsible, however reminders are needed so that important documents are returned in a timely manner. ***
Dismissal: Each day we will dismiss your child from our classroom according to the transportation method you have chosen for them. If your child will always be a walker, car rider, or Champion on a certain day of the week, you can let me know of the starting and ending dates and I will add the note to my dismissal chart. At this time, dismissal begins at 3:35 P.M. for walkers/car riders.
If you are picking up your child before the end of the school day, please let me know by sending a note with your child in the morning stating what time you will be coming. When you get to school, go directly to the office to sign out your child. The office staff will call down to our room. I will also need a note if your child is going home with someone other than you or a way different than usual.
Please contact the office regarding last minute changes in dismissal plans as I sometimes do not get a chance to check my email before the end of the day. If possible, please send a note in the morning for your child to give me.
Finally, please write all notes about dismissal on a separate sheet of paper so that I can send them to the office. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter. It is for your child’s safety.
I hope that this has helped in answering any questions you may have prior to the first day. I am looking forward to a fantastic year of fun and learning with your child!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Mazzolla
